“You know you’ve read a good book when you turn the last page and feel a little as if you have lost a friend.” –Paul Sweeney

Synopsis

How I Cook It, first published in 1949, features the wonderfully delicious recipes of Virginia McDonald, who, despite many hardships, started and successfully ran what legendary chef Duncan Hines called |one of the ten best places to eat in America,| the McDonald Tea Room in Gallatin, Missouri. How I Cook It, the first and only cookbook to be featured as a Book-of-the-Month Club selection, was published after Mrs. McDonald received thousands of requests for her restaurant's recipes. Included are a wide variety of tempting, easily prepared recipes for appetizers, salads, soups, sea foods and meats, breads, desserts, and more. About the Author: Virginia McDonald, a native of Texas, faced with massive bills due to illness, opened a small lunch counter for passing students in 1931 in what had been a blacksmith shop. Her philosophy of serving delicious food, beautifully presented never wavered as the restaurant flourished into a popular eatery with a nationwide reputation for excellence in dining. Virginia McDonald died in 1969, and several different owners continued to operate the restaurant until it was destroyed by fire on July 4, 2001.
